My name is Cassandra Soh, and I am 21 years old. I recently graduated from Nanyang Polytechnic with a diploma in Banking and Finance, and I am an incoming undergraduate at Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
I have been practising Taekwondo since I was 13 years old, giving me eight years of experience in this sport. My journey in Taekwondo began as a way to stay active, but it quickly became a passion that has significantly shaped my life.
Through Taekwondo, I have learned invaluable values such as respect, perseverance, and self-control. My favourite parts of training include the fascinating physical exercises that enhance our movement and accuracy. However, the training does come with its challenges, such as experiencing cramps and soreness the next day. Despite this, I
always feel satisfied, as I firmly believe in the motto “no pain, no gain.”
During my four years in secondary school, I had the honour of representing Edgefield Secondary School in eight interschool Taekwondo competitions, where I proudly earned eight medals. After graduating, I joined a Taekwondo club and continued to participate in several competitions, further honing my skills and achieving success.
In addition to my athletic pursuits, I have excelled academically. I graduated from Nanyang Polytechnic with a diploma with merit and received the prestigious UOB Asset Management Award for Outstanding Performance in Internship. This special award is granted to only one student in the graduating cohort for my course, and I am deeply honoured to have received it.
My commitment to Taekwondo extends beyond personal training. I took the initiative to sign up for coaching courses when I was 16 years old and have attended both Poomsae and Kyorugi referee courses. Since 2021, I have been the head coach at my current club, where I mentor and train young athletes. Additionally, I have represented my club as a referee in various competitions, contributing to the Taekwondo community.
Looking ahead, I aim to continue my journey in Taekwondo, striving for excellence both in the sport and in my personal development. I hope to inspire others through my experiences and contribute positively to the Taekwondo community and beyond.
My Reflection
My journey in Taekwondo began when I was 13 years old, and now, at 21, it remains a significant part of my life. Over the years, my passion for this martial art has only grown, fueled by the dynamic and challenging nature of the training, especially the kicks, which I find incredibly exhilarating. The values of respect and perseverance that I have learned through Taekwondo have
deeply influenced my character. Respect is a cornerstone of Taekwondo practice, not only in terms of bowing to instructors and peers but also in fostering a sense of mutual respect and understanding within the Dojang. Perseverance has been equally important, teaching me to push through challenges, whether they are physical hurdles during training or obstacles in everyday life.
One of the most memorable periods of my Taekwondo journey was during my Secondary school years. I vividly remember the joy of interacting with my Taekwondo instructors and ma’ams. Their guidance, encouragement, and the fun moments we shared have left an indelible mark on me. Those experiences were not just about improving my skills but also about building relationships and learning from their wisdom and expertise.
Taekwondo has been more than just a physical activity for me; it has been a source of personal growth and development. The discipline and focus required in training have helped me cultivate a strong work ethic and resilience. These qualities have transcended the ojang, influencing my approach to various aspects of my life, from academics to personal goals.
As I continue my Taekwondo journey, I am excited to keep learning and growing. The kicks, the camaraderie, and the values of respect and perseverance will always be at the heart of why I love Taekwondo. I look forward to the new challenges and experiences that lie ahead, knowing that Taekwondo will continue to shape and inspire me.
