Taekwondo isn’t just a hobby; it is a cornerstone in the narrative of my life. From those early days of trying not to trip over my own feet in a white belt to the proud moment of donning a black belt, it has been a ride. My Taekwondo journey started in 2013 at Edgefield Secondary School, where Taekwondo wasn’t just an extracurricular activity, it was mandatory. Initially, it felt like routine training until a defining moment when a coach singled me out for competition. That was the turning point when Taekwondo evolved from a mere obligation to a genuine passion.
Inspired by dedicated coaches, I decided to deepen my involvement. In 2016, I enrolled in a coaching course, marking the start of my coaching journey. Beyond the familiar halls of secondary school, Taekwondo has been a steadfast companion, guiding me through a myriad of experiences. This is the story of how this martial art transcended routine, becoming a teacher, a mentor, and a companion as I navigated life beyond secondary school.
The journey towards coaching hasn’t been a smooth one. Post-secondary school, I joined Coach Alan under Ethos Club. Initially, I found myself in the dual role of both student and assistant coach, guiding several students in their Taekwondo journey. Two years ago, Coach Alan posed a pivotal question about my true aspirations in Taekwondo. My response was clear—I wanted to lead my own Poomsae competition class. With his unwavering support, I transitioned into a coaching role, a responsibility I have consistently shouldered since then.
Even so, I persisted. When I led my students onto the mat for the first time, a profound sense of pride enveloped me. It wasn’t solely about the result. While winning is undoubtedly rewarding, what truly resonated was witnessing their unwavering dedication , persistent training, and commendable composure while facing the pressure of performing before a sizable audience for the first time. That, above all, was what made me exceptionally proud of their achievements.
To ensure that I provide my students with accurate instruction, I prioritize attending seminars, courses, and engaging in personal practice. This commitment ensures that I am equipped to teach them the latest techniques, guaranteeing that their training remains consistently effective.
Throughout this journey, I have obtained invaluable lessons. Training has been the crucible for developing not only my martial art skills but also instilling discipline and commitment within me. The rigors of consistent training have taught me the art of persistence, shaping my character in and out of the dojang. Moreover, the experience has been a masterclass in navigating pressure, particularly when faced with challenging situations in the class setting. This journey taught me tenacity–the ability to face difficulties head-on and emerge stronger.
Beyond the physical aspects, teaching Taekwondo has been a transformative process. It has honed my communication skills and illuminated the nuances of effective teaching. Connecting with students on an individual level, understanding their unique learning styles, and adapting my approach has been an enriching part of this educational odyssey.
As I reflect, I realize the journey has imparted lessons that transcend beyond martial arts. Patience, adaptability, and the profound impact of mentorship are among the more meaningful things I have cultivated along this path.
Undoubtedly, this transformative journey owes its existence to the unwavering motivation and encouragement by the numerous exceptional coaches I have encountered. Their guidance has not only shaped my path but has opened doors to countless opportunities that define my current standing in the Taekwondo journey.
Equally instrumental are the students who serve as a wellspring of inspiration. Their commitment and enthusiasm not only propel me to strive for excellence but also have the remarkable ability to brighten even the dullest coaching days. Their presence is a constant reminder of the impact a dedicated community can have on one’s journey.
As I step into a new chapter beyond secondary school, my black belt symbolizes not an end but a continuation. My future holds aspirations of coaching, sharing the profound impact Taekwondo had on my life, and perhaps, pursuing higher-level competitions to further challenge my limits. As I embark on the next chapter, the belt around my waist signifies not just skill but a mindset—steadfast, resilient, and always reaching for new heights. My Taekwondo journey beyond secondary school is a testament to the transformative power of dedication , discipline, and the pursuit of excellence.
