Taekwondo is integral to my life, my way of thinking and my being. It has taught me many valuable lessons and values that helped shape me into the person I am proud to be today.
When I first started practicing Taekwondo in secondary one. I was young and naïve. I was more interested in the Poomsae aspect more than anything else. I love the feeling of satisfaction and the sense of goal accomplishment of doing a pattern. For example, to be more accurate in my moves and stances gave me immense personal satisfaction and achievement.
Taekwondo has taught me discipline, focus and perseverance. It has taught me the importance of setting goals and working hard to achieve them. In Taekwondo, there is no easy way out or shortcuts. If you want to be successful, you have to put in the time and effort. You have to be strictly disciplined to keep training consistently. Besides, you have to be perseverant to overcome the setbacks. Lastly, you must remain focused in achieving your goals and learn to eliminate distractions.
Taekwondo is not just a physical training activity, it has also taught me many important values like respect, humility and kindness. I learn to respect my coaches and my peers. I learn to be humble even if I am better than others. I learn to be kind and helpful to my peers and grow alongside them during the trainings.
Perhaps most importantly, Taekwondo has taught me the power of believing in myself. I am no longer the same person who felt worthless. I am renewed and transformed to be an individual who is winning medals and is aspiring to greater height of achievement, such as competing for myself and my country.
In conclusion, Taekwondo has been a metamorphic experience for me. It has given me a sense of purpose and provided me with a set of values to guide me, to become the best human being exuding respect, discipline, perseverance, kindness and confidence in every aspect of my daily life.
