I’m Devonne, a student at Edgefield Secondary School, where I’m currently 16 years old. I have been taking part in Taekwondo as a school curriculum activity for three plus years before finally attaining my black belt in this sport. Taekwondo is a Korean martial art focused on dynamic kicking techniques, along with hand strikes and blocks. It emphasizes physical fitness, mental discipline, and self-defense skills. It’s also an Olympic sport, with competitions held worldwide.
Taekwondo has always interested me ever since I knew about it, seeing the precisions and fluidity of each kick and block respectively really amazed me. Though it takes up a lot of time as well as dedication to master the perfect kicks and patterns, I have never once felt the urge to give up. It’s a very self-discovery sport that made me understand myself a lot better. One of the toughest times was when I had to juggle learning the new patterns for grading and my academics, always leaving me utterly depleted at the end of the week. With my constant perseverance and determination to do well in both, I managed to plan my time wisely and continue excelling. However despite all the struggles, I notably enjoyed the sparing sessions with my friends as it really helped us bond together and let out any inner frustrations.
Taekwondo has been instrumental in my personal growth, fostering qualities such as discipline, resilience, and self-confidence. I’ve learned to push past my limits, developing mental toughness and perseverance that extends far beyond the dojang. Taekwondo has also instilled in me a profound sense of respect, both for myself and others, teaching me the importance of humility and empathy. I have always wanted to take part in the National School Games as well but never had the chance to due to various reasons.
Moving forward, if I ever decide to continue taekwondo again, I would join competitions without a doubt. I also greatly appreciate my instructors for being with me through this journey and I’ll forever be thankful for all the scoldings I’ve received to excel better.
